Understand HO1 - What Does Basic Homeowners Insurance Cover?

HO1, also known as Basic Homeowners Insurance is a bare bones policy that will cover your home in the case of very specific situations. It is not the most popular of options but some people do find it to work for their needs. For example, it does cover the home in the event that it becomes damaged by fire or lighting. Both of these situations can be catastrophic, and for some homeowners owning a policy that covers them in these events is worth the premium, even though it isn't the most comprehensive coverage available.

In total there are actually 11 situations that an HO1 homeowners insurance policy will cover against. In addition to fire and lighting, homeowners are protected from damage that results from smoke, the building being hit by an aircraft, hail or windstorm, explosion, broken glass inside the structure, and a few others. One thing to keep in mind is that no homeowners policy will cover a situation that could have been avoided by the homeowner. For example, if you purposely set a structure on fire, or you sustain roof damage solely because you have not had a broken roof repaired, then you can expect these not to be covered.
